Canterbury Summer Swiss

A great end to the 2009 chess year with another excellent tournament at the Box Hill Chess Club. The only disappointment was that a NSW visitor walked away with the 1st prize!

Qld lightning champion

Here’s a game from the final round of the Queensland Lightning Championships. Thanks to Kevin Casey (the eventual tournament winner) for sending us the game. It features a deep queen sac, followed by a neat knight sac, after which White is a whole queen up, but totally helpless to prevent mate. Amazing game!

Canterbury Summer Swiss

What a great turnout to the Canterbury Summer Swiss – one of the biggest weekenders of the year! It is a credit to the BHCC and Canterbury (with lots of junors playing). A great mix of experience and newbies with 9 players rated over 2000 and 9 players rated under 500! As always plenty of good ratings prizes give lots of opportunities for everyone to share in the $1500 prize fund.

Pairings and results (and live games when the DGT boards work) are being kept updated very promptly at the Box Hill Chess Club website. It is easy to see how Box Hill has become the best club in Australia with reporting like this.

The excitement from the first day was the second round loss by the top seed, Sam Chow. To view the annotated game (more…)
