Prahran Market is excited to announce it is launching a community Chess Club which is proudly sponsored by Bendigo Bank Prahran Market Branch.
Starting September 18, the Prahran Market Chess Club is open to everyone. The Chess Club will operate every Saturday morning from mid September from 10am-1pm in the Prahran Market Square.
Anyone can just turn up to play – no booking required and there is no cost involved.
There will be social chess games for beginner and intermediate players and challenge the Master for expert players. Don’t know how to play? Don’t let that put you off – we will be holding “Learn to Play” sessions as well!
Do you want to help us run the new Chess Club? Prahran Market is looking for Volunteers to help run the Chess Club on Saturday mornings. A love of the great game of Chess is a must!
Interested? Call 1300 4 CHESS (1300 424377) or email prahranmarket@chessclub.com.au for more information.

Last September we received a visit from David Cordover, here he is enjoying the moment, that must have been one of the lucky nights as i can see the free lollies on the table. You can see from the previous photo below we are a little more organised now with respect to seating placements and we now use the fabulous tournament standard chess sets and digital chess clocks provided by David and Chessworld to enhance the experience.

The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.
(F. Scott Fitzgerald)
Most chess players and administrators in this country are of first rate intelligence; yet we appear to struggle with the opposing ideas of tradition and progress. Today we must adapt and change at an increasingly rapid pace in order to keep up with the world around us; yet work even harder to maintain a community and connection with the past.
Welcome to the re-launch of On The Move. Many club players will have fond memories of a Victorian Chess Association newsletter of the same name from the ’80s and ’90s and we’re thrilled to have a past editor, IM Robert Jamieson, on board as editor in its new incarnation. On The Move will be available free of charge to all clubs in Australia in both hard-copy printed form and also by email or download; providing news, tips and articles of interest to club players (1200-1600 rating). We invite submissions from anyone who wishes to contribute. More >

I wonder if Hazel Joske is aware the fact that her services to chess in 1979 are now being re-appreciated thanks to a second-hand book dealer who came across this inscription:
I’d be very interested to hear from anyone who knows any of the names or can tell a bit of a story about this book.
The book is a copy of The Golden Dozen, by Chernev. If you’re interested in buying the book you can contact Bower Bird Books & Things on 02 6959 2770 or branding963@hotmail.com.au
They are asking $100 for the book, but I’m sure they’d be happy to haggle!
